THE ‘Adventure in Discovery’ science fair opened at the CSI Stadia Jimmy Fernandez Center in Dagupan last June 28, with various attractions that have excited students and expanded their appreciation of the sciences.

Among the most popular features is the Department of Science and Technology’s (DOST) unique “Science Explorer”, a bus packed with teaching aids on science to serve 720 students.

Dr. Filma Brawner, director of the Science Educational Institute, explained that the DOST’s “Science Explorer” is on its first road trip since the opening of classes this year.

Lamenting that only 76 percent of the country’s 5,359 public schools have science laboratories, Brawner said through the “Science Explorer”, they found a pioneering way of bringing to the schools “a fun yet enriching experience in science”.

The DOST’s “Science Explorer” is the Philippines’ first and only mobile interactive learning facility that features exciting hands-on learning through fun and easy science activities.

Also on exhibit are car robotics developed by students of the Divine Word Academy of Dagupan and aquariums or ornamental fishes and miniature techno-demo projects of the Dagupan-based National Integrated Fisheries Technology.

Also on show is a stationary bicycle, which when pedalled produces electricity and others, all for future scientists to see.

Admission fee is P50 for a two-hour tour of the exhibit, which will be open until July 15.

Dagupan Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez, host of the mobile exhibit of the Philippine Science Centrum, opened the exhibit along with youth Vice Mayor Clarisse Mae Zaplan who was joined by other youth officials who served the city for a week last week.

The science fair forms part of the 25th anniversary celebration of CSI designed to increase the awareness in science of some 7,000 students in Dagupan City.

Fernandez said the exhibit, with its wonderful scientific breakthroughs, is a must-see for students. She said the students need not go to Marikina City anymore to see the exhibit.

The exhibit is also supported by the Philippine Foundation for Science and Technology, CSI Group of Companies, Department of Education and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources.

Proceeds of the science fair will go to the City Schools Superintendent Alma Ruby Torio to fund their respective projects.
