BATCH ’79 of the Divine Word Academy of Dagupan held a most memorable homecoming called “Balik Tanaw at Pasasalamat” last November 3 when it turned over its project — a newly renovated and upgraded science laboratory — to the school administrator.

Fr. Edsel Demillo, DWAD director, in the presence of Divine Word Provincial Supervisor Rev. Fr. Jerome Adriatico, SVD, accepted the project and thanked the batch for building a science laboratory which he describes as “really 100 percent beautiful and the technical aspect used in it “is also another 100 percent beautiful.”

He happily noted that the quality of the new lab “is comparable with laboratories not only in Dagupan but also in Manila”.

Two months ago, members of Batch ’79, led by class president Caroline Fernandez, met to plan for their homecoming and agreed that they should leave a legacy to their beloved alma mater for the benefit of today’s and future Divinians. Fernandez is also the homecoming coordinator.

Thereafter, the group went to see Fr. Demillo and asked what they could do for the school. Demillo presented the list of things that need to be improved. One of the priorities listed was the need to improve the Science Laboratory.

Members of the class visited the lab to assess its needs and later started calling their classmates all over Pangasinan, in different parts of the country and abroad.

The choice to renovate and upgrade the school’s Science Lab was timely because Mrs. Alicia Ferrer, principal, said that when DWAD applied for accreditation for Education Service Contracting (ESC) with the Department of Education, it passed the assessment but the school’s facilities, equipment and laboratory earned the lowest points in the grading system.

Stephen Tan, the project head, with Falconeri Crisologo, as project engineer, and the rest of members of Batch ’79 worked hand in hand with Fr. Demillo, DWAD director, and Mrs. Ferrer in pushing the project through.

Crisologo, noting the science lab was too narrow, with poor lighting and ventilation and minimal air circulating inside, decided to tear down a wall partition, install more efficient windows, install roof insulation, provid the exist door, rehabilitate the comfort room and provide new wall and floor tire, provide for bigger wash area and conveniences.

Work on the new Science lab started first week of September and completed on Oct. 29.

In addition, Batch 79 saw to it the new Science Lab got new apparatuses, that included 10 new microscopes.

Ms. Fernandez said as Divinians, they support the vision of Fr. Demillo for the school.

Mrs. Ferrer thanked Batch 79, pointing out that for the first time there was a renovation undertaken at DWAD and the renovation, she said was “really world class”.

Those who attended the homecoming and turn over rites included former Director and parish priests Fr. Cris Cancino, Fr. Owie Obmaces, Fr. Gil Alejandria, former principal Miss Concessa Rapacon with former faculty members Felipe Rapacon, Mr. and Mrs. Roberto Castillo, Naomi Ferrer-Ramos and Anita Ang-Lee.

The activities included a dinner/program that included a video presentation, community singing, sharing of Batch 79 members’ memorable experiences in DWAD and giving tokens of appreciation to former mentors and friends.
