LINGAYEN–Fresh from being adjudged second runner-up in the national Pearl awards in recognition of the provincial government’s sterling tourism promotions, the province of Pangasinan has again earned a national award, this time declared as among the Philippines’ top three provinces with the most outstanding provincial libraries.

On behalf of Governor Amado T. Espino Jr., Pangasinan Provincial Head Librarian Evangeline Paragas received a plaque of recognition given by Director Antonio Santos of the National Library of the Philippines (NLP).

Among the twelve finalists, the Pangasinan Provincial Library, the sole national qualifier from region one, landed third. The Provincial Libraries of Quezon and Bohol placed first and second, respectively.

Under the leadership of Espino, the provincial library has undergone major renovations and upgrading of books and facilities to be in tune with the digital age, Paragas said.

Some nine librarians and staff members of the Pangasinan Provincial Library also attended the recognition and awarding ceremonies held at the NLP-Epifanio delos Santos Auditorium on November 5.

The search conducted along with the celebration of the Library Information Services Month this November was supervised by the NLP in partnership with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the Philippine Librarians Association, Inc. (PLAI).

Moreover, the search focused on giving recognition to the invaluable services that libraries render to their clientele and to recognize the librarians’ commitment and dedication to their functions and responsibilities.

Meanwhile, the provincial libraries of Zamboanga Del Norte, Cavite and Pampanga received consolation awards. Other finalists were the provincial libraries of Sorsogon, IloIlo, Negros Occidental, Surigao Del Sur, Benguet and Cotabato. (PIO/Mark Gerry Naval Oblanca)
