LINGAYEN–The provincial government through the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPAg) distributed some 23,500 mangrove seedlings to the local government units of Sual, Lingayen, Infanta, Bolinao, Dasol and San Carlos City last November 6 at the Provincial Mangrove Nursery in Bolinao.

Dalisay Moya, Officer-in-Charge of OPAg, said the province, under the stewardship of Governor Amado T. Espino, Jr., has prioritized the project to help address global warming effects and to implement sustainable coastal resource management programs for Pangasinan.

Moya said that through the initiative of the governor, the province has been accorded the Coastal Resource Management Hall of Fame Award for three consecutive years because of its mangrove reforestation project and river and coastal clean-up drive.

“It has always been the priority of Gov. Espino to protect the environment thus mangrove reforestation efforts were sustained since the fish farm and mangrove nurseries were established,” Moya stressed, adding that the mangrove nursery in Bolinao town is the only existing mangrove facility in Region I that has been in operation for four years now.

The mangrove seedlings, purchased by the provincial government at P20 each, were distributed to all coastal LGUs for free to be planted in riverbanks and coastal areas.

Since 2007, the provincial government has propagated a total of 350,885 mangrove seedlings. Of this number, some 232,004 were distributed and planted covering 34,965 hectares of reforested area.

Breakdown of distributed seedlings are as follows: Sual-6,000 pieces; Lingayen-2,500; San Carlos City- 3,000; Infanta- 3,000; Bolinao- 6,000 and Dasol- 3,000.
