CHED oks PSU Alaminos operations
THE issue raised over the legitimacy of the Pangasinan State University (PSU) campus in Alaminos City may now be settled as the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) has confirmed it has given permission for the school’s operation.
The legitimacy of the operations of PSU Alaminos was earlier questioned by Ruben Morante, president of the private school PASS, who claimed it has not received CHED approval.
Morante also accused officials of PSU and the Alaminos City government of corrupt practices relating to the school’s operation.
Meanwhile, three courses were removed from the curricular offerings of PSU Alaminos this year because these are included in the list of courses placed under moratorium by CHED.
These are Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA), B.S. in Hotel and Restaurant Management and B.S. in Information Technology,
According to CHED Regional Director Caridad Abuan, guest on Wednesday at the ‘Media in Action’ program of the Pangasinan Press Club (PPC) headed by PUNCH columnist Gonzalo Duque, clarified that these three courses, as well as Bachelor of Science in Nursing, are considered over-subscribed courses and have been classified under a moratorium status by CHED.
The moratorium applies only to new schools such as PSU Alaminos.
All other colleges who have been offering the over-subscribed courses can continue and admit student enrollees.
Abuan clarified too that although teacher education is also one of the over-subscribed programs, PSU Alaminos can still offer its teacher education program, being an accredited program of PSU considered a center of educational development.
PSU Alaminos was established by virtue of a memorandum of agreement signed last year by Mayor Hernani Braganza and PSU president Victoriano Estira.
Students enrolled at PSU Alaminos last year in the phased-out courses will have to shift to other courses or transfer to other schools.–LM
