DANGEROUS Drugs Board (DDB) chief Antonio Villar Jr. lauded Dagupan City Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez for adopting the Barkada Kontra Droga (BKD) program in the city.

“If all the vice mayors of Pangasinan is like your vice mayor, the problem of illegal drugs will be significantly reduced,” Villar said.

Speaking during the launching of the project last Friday at the CSI Stadia, undertaken jointly by Fernandez, DDB and the Department of Education, Villar pointed out that it is only Dagupan that demonstrated its political will to combat drug abuse by launching the program.

He also suggested to local officials present to request for DDB’s financial assistance to finish the construction of the Drug Rehabilitation Center being built in Bonuan Binloc. The center is presently being funded alone by Fourth District Rep. Gina de Venecia.

The DDB chief also announced the recent appointment of Atty. Gonzalo Duque as DDB senior consultant.

Villar echoed his policy that drug users are victims and must be rehabilitated but drug lords and drug pushers must be meted the highest possible penalty because as they destroy the lives and future of their victims, especially the youth.

To manifest his appreciation of the series of anti-drug abuse related activities, Villar agreed to double the cash prizes given to the talent search component of the BKD to which Fernandez agreed to give her counterpart.

After the launching, lectures were delivered by Ella Marie Dimaculangan, DDB information officer; Usec Rommel Garcia, Atty. Cesar Posada, DDB legal consultant; and Koji Francisco, a DDB-EU-TRC graduate. The BKD pledge of commitment was delivered by Usec Edgar Galvante, DDB acting executive director.

For her part, the vice mayor thanked Villar for introducing the BKD project to the city.
