THERE is enough rice in the province for Pangasinan consumers till early next year.

The assurance was made jointly by Dr. Beverly Peralta, NFA branch manager for Western Pangasinan based in Lingayen; and Ligaya Apolinario, assistant NFA branch manager for Eastern Pangasinan based in Binalonan, during the KBP media forum last week.

The two officials said they enough rice stocks in their bodegas to be funneled to the markets at anytime should the need arise to keep retail prices at bay especially during the lean months, June to September.

Peralta said that the Western Pangasinan branch has a current rice stock of 60,000 bags which is expected to exceed even the required 30-day buffer stock.

They also have 904,000 bags of palay which when milled could extend the buffer stock in the area up to next year.

On the other hand, Apolinario said there are 350,00 bags of rice stocked in their different warehouses and an additional 475,000 bags of palay, equivalent to 280,000 bags of rice.

Both branches of the NFA admitted that 90 percent of their rice stocks were imported from Vietnam, Pakistan and Indonesia.

NFA rice is pegged today at P27 per kilo while commercial rice is sold at P28 to P29 per kilo.
