Mayors revive tri-city ferry plan

THE proposed ferry system that will provide water transport between the cities of Dagupan and Alaminos in Pangasinan and San Fernando or Agoo in La Union has been brought out from the shelf and is once again being planned for implementation.

The water transport system, intended to shorten travel time between the major cities, has been in the drawing board for several years but has not been seriously pursued.

Alaminos Mayor Hernani Braganza said the chances of having the project realized is greater now given the present national administration’s thrust for the Public Private Partnership program.

Braganza said the ferry system will facilitate economic development in his city as it will provide a faster and alternative route to get to their town, home of the well-known Hundred Islands National Park.

CATAMARAN DESIGN

Dagupan City Mayor Benjamin Lim, for his part, is also keen on pursuing the project.

In a media forum last week, Lim presented a catamaran design that is being planned for use in the ferry system.

“We are about to call for a tri-city meeting in the weeks to come to present how a “catamaran” would look like, which will sit about 102 passengers,” Lim said.

“The port will not be very big because anyway the passenger for our “catamaran” will only be in the vicinity of a hundred, but the design of the boat would accommodate not only passengers because it can also load at least four medium size vehicles and at least six tons of cargo,” he said.

Lim said that the project is very timely, “kasi one of the complaints of the people going to Hundred Islands is the travel time.”

“The two-hulled water vehicle can seat 102 passengers, four medium-sized vehicles and six tons of cargoes,” Lim said.

TPLEX LINK

Lim also proposed the construction of a west-bound highway connecting Dagupan to the Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union Expressway (TPLEX), which is now under construction.

The mayor cited the importance of coping with economic developments on in the North.

He cited the potential of the Macapagal Airport in Clark as the next major international airport following reports that the private sector is taking over its development,” he said.

Lim said the city must cope with rapid developments in the region. (With report from CIO)
