Linis Estero launched in Dagupan
THE river clean-up campaign in the province has been expanded with the launch of the “Linis Estero” project under the Water Quality Monitoring Area (WQMA) program of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
Dagupan is the first in the province to conduct the project after reports presented during a recent WQMA conference hosted by the city showed that an excessive amount of fecal coliform is present along the Sinocalan-Dagupan river system.
The Linis Estero was conducted in barangays Herrero-Perez, Pogo Chico, Barangay I, Barangay II, Barangay IV, Poblacion Oeste, Pogo Grande, Malued,Lucao, Pantal, Tapuac, Caranglaan, Bacayao Norte, Bonuan Boquig, and Bonuan Gueset.
The barangays received a total of 206 sacks of rice from the city government and distributed as “food for work” among the residents who volunteered for the program.
Private groups that joined the clean-up drive included Carmak Motors, Magic Group of Companies, Eternal Gardens, Knights of Columbus, Beauty Professional Marketing, Villaflor Hospital, Balingit Home Furnishing and Colegio de Dagupan.
Teddy Villamil Jr., chief of the city waste management division, said the involvement of the private sector will be a significant factor to sustain the program.

In line with the project, the Adopt-An-Estero Program was launched to mobilize communities to rid the esteros of waste, debris and silt.
The city government also intends to institutionalize good sanitation and solid wastes management practices among the estero communities.
Lim appealed to all barangay leaders, especially those who failed to attend the seminar-WQMA workshop, to cooperate in the program.
“We are not playing games here neither are we wasting time on this. We are here to learn and to know the implications of a dirty estero so that we will know what our responsibilities are as barangay officials. What is important here is for us to realize that quality management is important,” the mayor said.
Meanwhile, the mayor also laid down the plans to ultimately clear the Pantal and Calmay river banks of illegal settlers.
He said a housing program for 440 families in Bagong Barrio is being prepared in order to clear big parts of the Pantal and Calmay districts.
