60 “Pepeng” victims get new homes

STA. BARBARA–Sixty families displaced by typhoon “Pepeng” in 2009 finally have their new homes in Barangay Matic-Matic here under the auspices of the Core Shelter Assistance Program (CSAP) of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

Each family was allotted one unit of bright yellow duplex-type homes with well-tailored vegetable and ornamental garden.

The core shelter units were built under a sharing scheme between the DSWD, the local government, United Nations World Food Program-Food for Work Program and the beneficiaries. DSWD provided construction materials valued at P70,000 for each unit, while the lot, gravel and sand were the counterpart of the local government unit. The cost of labor was shouldered by the UN program.

“The core shelter unit, whether big or small, is a good indication of the rekindled modern ‘bayanihan spirit’ among the recipients and the project implementers,” said DSWD Division Chief Anniely J. Ferrer.

Mayor Carlito Zablan thanked the DSWD and pledged to construct an access road leading to the housing site and to facilitate the setting up of streetlights.

The CSAP was the first modified core shelter duplex design recommended by the local officials and duly approved by DSWD to maximize the lot.

CSAP is a project that provides assistance to indigent families displaced by typhoons, particularly those whose houses were totally damaged.–LM
