DTI warns public against substandard Christmas lights

THE Department of Trade and Industry provincial office has warned the public against substandard Christmas lights being sold in shops around the city.

The agency issued the advisory following reports of the unabated selling of these items in the local market.

DTI official Marjurie Loresco said four establishments selling Christmas lights located on A.B Fernandez Avenue have been warned for selling poor quality Christmas lights in violation of the standard safety requirements.

She, however, declined to name the establishments.

“We issued them a warning letter, and advised them to withdraw the substandard Christmas lights immediately, or else we will confiscate all these,” said Loresco.

Loresco said that products being sold by these establishments were monitored to have no import community clearance (ICC).

She said that standard quality Christmas lights should have their quality standard logo, PS (Product Safety) for locally-made products, and ICC for imported products.

Loresco said the recent confiscation of substandard Christmas lights by the DTI national office and the Bureau of Customs in Manila was good because the distributors can no longer ship these to retailers in the provinces.

She said the DTI provincial office could not fully blame the retailers as they are just sourcing their products from big distributors and suppliers in Manila.

But she said the DTI is continuously cautioning the retailers to stay alert against banned and illegal products by checking their brand names and quality standard marks.

Loresco said a substandard Christmas light is not safe to use because it has an unacceptable high temperature that could make them explode and result in a blaze.  — AQL
