MATUWID NA DAAN

SECRETARY Herminio “Sonny” Coloma of the Presidential Communications Operations Office welcomed the suggestion of forming a “Matuwid na Daan” movement in the provinces to further promote good governance at the local government level.

The suggestion came from members of the Pangasinan Press Club (PPC) whom Coloma addressed before speaking during the Area Meeting of the Rotary Clubs at Lenox Hotel in Dagupan Tuesday night.

Coloma, however, believes that such a movement, which is intended to be a watchdog against graft and corruption in the provinces, would no longer be necessary if every Filipino takes the principle of public accountability to heart.

“It’s a laudable and most welcome move,” said Coloma, adding that he will bring this up in his next meeting with the Rotary Clubs.

Bahala ang bawat isa sa atin na isa-buhay ang Matuwid na Daan,” Coloma added citing President Aquino’s decision not to use a wang-wang (siren) and to direct his convoy to observe traffic rules diligently.

If all Filipinos emulate the President and follow the law, he said, then a Matuwid na Daan movement would no longer be necessary, he said.

But then again, he chuckled noting that “Filipinos are the most disciplined people in the world except in their country”.

As for the government, Coloma said the PNoy administration already made significant strides in fulfilling its promise under the “Matuwid na Daan” program.

He cited the impeachment of former Chief Justice Renato Corona, the filing of plunder charges against former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, and the Ombudsman’s ongoing review of cases that were languishing in the archives during the previous administration, including the anomalous NBN-CTE deal, and Metrorail overpricing.

ROTARY CLUB

At the Rotary Club meeting, Coloma called on volunteer service organizations such as the Rotary to take advantage of the social media to advance their work and advocacies.

Coloma, himself a Rotarian, called on the members to pursue not just intellectual advancement, but also to raise their “emotional and spiritual quotients” to better serve the community.

“Every Rotary Club is named after a place to underline the facts that the Rotary exists to serve a community—for the development and betterment of a community,” he stressed.

The Rotary Clubs of Dagupan, Dagupan East, Downtown Dagupan, Uptown Dagupan, Metro Dagupan and Central Pangasinan attended the meeting. (with report from PIA-Pangasinan)
