Espino condemns slay try on brgy’ official, husband

LINGAYEN–Gov. Amado T. Espino, Jr. has condemned the slay attempt on a barangay official of Lingayen and her husband last week at a highway in Binmaley town by still unidentified gunmen even as he called on local officials and the citizenry to be more vigilant against movements of suspicious-looking strangers in every neighborhood of the province.

The governor appealed to the townsfolk to cooperate with and report immediately to law enforcement authorities any information that could lead to the identification and arrest of the perpetrators.

The victims, Zorayda Arcinue, a barangay captain of Poblacion, Lingayen, and her businessman husband, Ramon, former vice mayor of Lingayen.

The Arcinue couple was on their way home from Dagupan City on board a Honda Civic car when the gunmen riding in tandem on a motorcycle sped alongside and opened fire.

A witness immediately rushed to check the victims. He helped the wounded couple transfer to the back seat and he drove their car to the Villaflor Medical Hospital in Dagupan City.

Informed of the incident, the governor rushed to the hospital to see for himself the extent of injuries suffered by the couple.

After a few hours of emergency treatment on the wounds of the Arcinues, hospital authorities declared the couple out of danger.

Police investigators are still looking into the motive of the slay attempt.

Relatives of the couple said they were stunned by the incident as they told authorities they knew of nothing inimical to the couple that could have triggered the ambush.

The governor directed Sr. Supt. Rosueto Ricaforte, Pangasinan police director, to mobilize a crack team to get to the bottom of the ambush-slay attempt.

A reward of P500,000 was posted by the governor and the family of the victims for any information that will lead to the arrest of the gunmen.

He also asked local officials to intensify their crime watch campaigns by revitalizing the barangay blotter system to monitor movements of people in their areas of responsibility, especially those owning motorbikes. (PIO)

All systems go for IRAA 2011

LINGAYEN–“It’s all set!”

This was announced by Modesto Operania, sports coordinator, as the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center gymnasium (NRSCC) prepares for the upcoming Ilocos Region Athletic Association (IRAA) meet 2011 set on March 14 to 19.

According to Operania, the IRAA meet was originally supposed to be hosted by the Pangasinan Division II but due to lack of proper venue and equipment for the sports event, they sought the assistance of the Pangasinan provincial government as the co-host, to use NRSCC which is designed to hold this kind sports festivity.

“Not only did Governor Amado T. Espino, Jr. provide the venue for the athletes but he also gave them physical and mental preparations as well,” Operania said.

He added that Pangasinan contingents were sent to Nueva Ecija for a tune-up game as part of their intensive training.

“All-out support si Governor Espino for this activity,” Operania said.

The tune-up games were mainly focused on the sporting events of athletics, swimming, chess, and volleyball among others, in order for Pangasinense athletes to excel in various fields.

As this developed, Pangasinan contingents are now gunning to dethrone the defending champs.

For the last 11 years, Ilocos Norte holds the championship crown while Pangasinan II and Pangasinan I contingents consistently landed on the 1st runner-up slot and 3rd or 4th slot, respectively.

However, last year’s ranking of Pangasinan 1 has improved to 2nd runner-up.

The IRAA meet will be participated by some 14 divisions coming from Region 1. (PIO/Darwin Magalong)
