DCWD reaches island villages
THE Dagupan City Water District (DCWD) has at last expanded its service to the island barangays using underground pipes laid down across the Calmay River from the mainland.
Residents of the island villages have over the decades been fetching potable water from the Dagupan mainland.
The project was inaugurated on March 2 with the three of the five island villages of the city, namely Salapingao, Calmay and Lomboy, initially served with potable water 24/7.
Adelfo Valle, DCWD project manager, said right after the inauguration, household owners in the three villages were urged to apply for water connection with DCWD.
Valle said pipes are arlready being laid from Barangay Salapingao to Pugaro and work is expected to completed next month.
In Carael, a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) has yet to be signed between the Carael Water Association and the DCWD for the extension of water service to the village.
The expansion project is funded by a grant from the Local Water Utilities Administration (LWUA), plus a 50 percent counterpart from DCWD, totaling P10 million.
On top of this amount, Valle said the DCWD will have to releases an additional investment to complete the project, which also involves the construction of a groundwater reservoir in Bonuan with a capacity of storing 2,500 cubic meters of ground water.
With the reservoir, Valle explained, there will be increased water pressure in all DCWD service areas, particularly in downtown and Barangay Lucao.—LM
