Alaminos eyes to be Zero Waste City

ALAMINOS CITY–This city has recently forged a partnership with the Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives (GAIA) in line with its vision to become a Zero Waste City in the future.

Mayor Hernani Braganza said GAIA is a global civil society network promoting Zero Waste as a means for improved health, environmental and climate protection and for green jobs and enterprises.

GAIA discourages burning of wastes, which induces the green house effect, resulting in global warming which in turn is believed to be one of the reasons for the current climate change.

Braganza said the establishment of the city’s material recovery facility coupled with the adoption of its own ZeroWaste Alaminos City Project is geared towards Alaminos’ goal to become a vibrant green city in five to seven years.

Last year, Alaminos placed second in the 2010 Search for Cleanest, Greenest and Safest City sponsored by the Regional Development Council (RDC) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

Alaminos, home of the protected area Hundred Islands National Park, was also a recipient of the 2010 Likas Yaman Award for Environmental Excellence from the DENR.

The “Best LGU Initiated Environmental Project Award” was also conferred to the city for its pioneering efforts in the conservation, protection and rehabilitation of its vast ecosystem and rich natural resources.—LM
