River clean-up in 4 areas 90% done
LINGAYEN–The provincial government’s river clean-up project has so far cleared and dredged 90% of the rivers in three towns and one city.
Task Force Kalikasan, the group carrying out the clean-up operations under the “Ilog ko, Bilayen tan Aroen ko” program, reported during the program’s first general assessment meeting held March 1 that most of the rivers in Binmaley, Bugallon, Lingayen and San Carlos City have been covered.
Governor Amado Espino Jr. lauded the group’s accomplishment and at the same time recognized the people’s contribution to the project’s success.
“The key to the success of this campaign is your understanding and cooperation,” Espino said referring to the communities around the rivers.
Espino acknowledged that some people, particularly those who have set up illegal fishing structures along the rivers, have been affected and are resisting the project.
Espino said the affected sectors will be given tabal (fishnets) as an alternative to their illegal structures that caused a negative impact on the community’s ecology.
Meanwhile, Binmaley Mayor Lorenzo Cerezo, Lingayen Mayor Ernesto Castañeda, Jr. and Bugallon Mayor Rodrigo Orduña, together with their respective barangay officials vowed to “continue this campaign started by the governor until we reach our goal”.
Also present in the meeting were members of other agencies involved in the project including the Philippine National Police, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Department of Public Works and Highways, Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, the Maritime Police, the Coast Guard, and some educational institutions.
