GSIS relaxes policy on survivorship pension
SPOUSES of deceased pensioners of the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) can now receive the survivorship pension even if they are gainfully employed or receiving income from other sources.
The GSIS recently approved and started implementing a new policy which qualifies surviving spouses to receive the usual half of the GSIS pensioners’ monthly benefit even if he or she earns more than the minimum wage rate of national government employees or is getting pension from other institutions.
Robert Vergara, GSIS president and general manager, said the GSIS, under the new policy, will also restore the accrued amounts equivalent to the period of suspension for those whose pensions were suspended under the old policy.
The GSIS is also calling on surviving spouses whose applications were previously denied to submit their applications for processing and computation retroactively.
Under the new policy, the maximum amount of basic survivorship pension should not exceed 50 percent of Step 8 of the current salary of an Undersecretary under the Salary Standardization Law, or a little over P30,000.
The ceiling is based on the rank of an Undersecretary which is the highest career position in government, Vergara explained.
More than 300,000 old age and survivorship pensioners stand to benefit from the new policy. (PIA Pangasinan)
