NFA palay buying starts

THE National Food Authority’s 19 stationary palay buying stations in Region 1, including six in eastern Pangasinan and four in western Pangasinan, are now open for procurement of the main cropping season harvest.

Aside from the buying stations, the NFA will also field mobile procurement teams to remote areas to lessen the burden of farmers in transporting their produce.

NFA Director Piolito C. Santos said the agency will buy clean and dry palay from farmers at the government price of P17.00 per kilogram.

He added that farmers can also avail of incentives, whether they are individual or members of farmer cooperatives, including delivery fee of P0.20 per kilogram and another P0.20 per kilogram for drying fee. For cooperatives, the incentives are the same as the individual farmers plus an additional P0.30 per kilogram cooperative development incentive.

Santos said they expect to procure around 1.2 million bags of palay, which would serve as the region’s buffer stocks to ensure food sufficiency and security in the area.

The region, he added, is expected to produce some 27,170,048 bags for the second semester of 2012.
