Verzosa orders Caramat: Step up drive vs. drugs
RESPONSE TO REP. GINA’S CALL
LINGAYEN—Sr. Supt. Mariano Luis Verzosa, officer in-charge of the Pangasinan Police, has ordered the chief of police of Dagupan to intensify the campaign against the illegal drug trade in the city.
Verzosa’s order to Supt. Romeo Caramat was in response to the letter of 4th District Rep. Gina de Venecia in September expressing concern about the rampant drug pushing activities done even in broad daylight in her own barangay, Bonuan Binloc, in Dagupan.
De Venecia also wrote a letter to the regional director of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA).
In her letter, De Venecia cited the report by the local media tagging Barangay Bonuan Binloc as the hub of drug trade in Dagupan and Pangasinan.
The PDEA itself has tagged Dagupan as the drug transshipment point in the whole of Region 1.
In his letter to Rep. De Venecia dated October 2, 2012, Verzosa did not outline the planned police action, but instead cited records from January to September 30, 2012 showing that the Dagupan City Police Station conducted 52 police operations against illegal drugs.
This, he said, resulted in the confiscation of 74.187 grams of shabu valued at P148,337; confiscation of 385.5 grams of marijuana valued at P9,637.50; and arrest of 70 individual suspects.
Of those arrested, 47 cases were filed in court for Violation of Republic Act 9165, the Dangerous Drug Act of 1992.
Verzosa said that in Barangay Bonuan Binloc alone, there were 16 police operations conducted resulting in the arrest of 28 suspects.
In ending his letter, Verzosa wrote, “I am very glad for your great concern to address the problem on illegal drugs in Dagupan City as well as the whole area of 4th District of Pangasinan and rest assured that we will do our best to help you in your crusade to avert this nefarious activity.”
