Havens for abandoned kids, disabled mulled
SAN FABIAN–Fourth District Rep. Gina de Venecia plans on building another haven for a marginalized sector in Pangasinan this year, this time for abandoned children and persons with disability.
De Venecia said babies who have been abandoned by their parents need a special home where they can be taken cared of while people with disabilities need an assistance center where they can be trained to become productive citizens.
Previously, De Venecia, together with her husband, former House Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr., put up the Haven for Women in Dagupan City and other homes for the Children and Elderly in Alabang with regional centers in various parts of the country.
Meanwhile, De Venecia also announced that the Region 1 Drug Rehabilitation Center in Dagupan is set to be completed this year with the construction of a 300-bed dormitory.
The project was started through the Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) of Mr. De Venecia but was not completed after the additional PDAF was withheld by the previous administration.
Rep. De Venecia has succeeded in seeking the release of this fund from the Department of Budget and other concerned government agencies.
The regional drug rehabilitation center will be operated by the government-owned Region 1 Medical Center (R1MC).
De Venecia, who has just been elected president of the Association of Lady Legislators in the 15th Congress which is composed of 64 congresswoman, also recently filed a bill in Congress seeking the expansion of the R1MC from its present 300-bed capacity to 600-bed capacity to become the largest government hospital north of Manila.—LM
