THE much-talked about third district cycling road race, dubbed “VictoRey Tour de Tercero Distrito”, unfolds today with 80 professional and amateur cyclists participating.
The bikefest, organized by retired PNP deputy director Reynaldo Velasco, intended exclusively for Pangasinan’s professional and amateur cyclists, will traverse Malasiqui, Bayambang, Basista, San Carlos City , Calasiao, Sta. Barbara and Mapandan with an approximate distance of 178 kilometers.
Velasco, a native of Sta. Barbara and former director of the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO), will personally flag off the participants and award the prizes to the winners.
Mel Velasco, the race’s chief coordinator, said the road battle will start and finish in front of the municipal hall of Sta. Barbara.
He said Sta. Barbara Councilor Emmanuel Cabangon is helping coordinate the project that promises a total of P83,000 in cash prices plus trophies and medals.
The champion will bring home P10,000 while the first and second runners-up will earn P8,000 and P6,000 respectively. Trophies will be presented as well.
The fourth and fifth finishers will receive P5,000 and P4,000 respectively while the sixth to tenth finishers will receive P2,000 each with medals.
The 11th to 20th placers will be awarded P1,000 each.
Those who will complete the course will get P500 each.
Gen. Velasco said the race will not only help revive the interest of Pangasinenses in cycling but will also promote his on-going anti-drug campaign called KAPANALIG (Kabataang Panlalawigan Laban sa Ipinagbabawal Na Gamot).
“We want to create more opportunities for our local cyclists so they can further improve their riding skills for the future big races,” Velasco said.
“At the same time, they can also be our partners in the anti-drug campaign as they are good models who practice self-discipline and healthy living,” Velasco added.
San Miguel Corporation, Coca-Cola Bottlers, Inc., Ginebra San Miguel and Mr. Duksim Park are the race’s major sponsors. The road race will be covered live by Aksyon Radyo and Super Radyo on 1161 and 1548 Khzs, on a band, respectively.
