THE four-man Dagupan Karate Team from the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) bagged six bronzes in the Milo Karate Championship held October 22 at the Music Hall of SM Mall of Asia in Metro Manila.

Despite difficulties in adjusting to the Kobe Osaka International (KOI) rules, members of Team Dagupan gave more seasoned players from the SM-based AAK Karate Team a good fight.

The Milo Karate Championships, organized by Milo Philippines and AAK Karate School to hone up Philippine representatives to the KOI World Cup Championships slated next year, was officiated by members of the AAK Referee Council.

Jayson Ramil Macaalay of Northwestern University’s Special Science High School won two bronzes in the Kumite (sparring) and Kata (form) competitions.

Fidel Salvador Reyes of the University of Luzon added two bronzes when he placed second runner-up in the Kumite and Kata competitions.

Gerard Martin Tamayo of the Dagupan City National High School won the bronze in the Kata competition while Jona Reyes, also of UL, contributed another bronze in girls’ Kumite competition.

Team Dagupan participated in eight of the total 20 events.

The other teams were AAK SM Megamall, AAK SM City, AAK SM Las Pinas, AAK Batangas, Ateneo de Manila, University of the Philippines, La Salle Zobel, La Salle Greenhils, St. Paul College and Gaspeed Las Pinas.
