Governor, SP express condolences to the bereaved family of ex VG Nancy Sison
LINGAYEN–The provincial government, led by Governor Amado T. Espino, Jr., Vice Governor Jose Ferdinand Calimlim, Jr. and members of the provincial board, expressed condolences to the bereaved family of the late former Vice Governor Nancy Q. Sison who died January 3 at the age of 87.
During the first regular session of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan for year 2011 on January 7, the members of the board approved Provincial Resolution No. 339-2011 expressing sympathy.
Sison, whose body lies in state at the Loyola Chapel, Manila will be flown via helicopter from the Nichols Airbase to the Lingayen airstrip on Monday, January 10, for a necrological service at 4 p.m. at the Sangguniang Panlalawigan Hall.
Sison served as Pangasinan Senior Board Member from 1956 to 1959 and was elected Vice Governor from 1960 to 1963.
She also served as Social Welfare Undersecretary in 1960 and appointed Commissioner of the Role of Filipino Women during the term of former President Fidel V. Ramos. She also founded the Girl Scout of the Philippines Pangasinan Charter in 1943.
Furthermore, she authored the book entitled, “Pangasinan: Look Back with Love” in the early ‘80s.
She will be buried on January 11 near the tomb of her husband, the late Justice and former Pangasinan Governor Porfirio Sison at the Lingayen cemetery. (PIO/Ruby R. Bernardino)

War veterans, foreign dignitaries to attend 66th Lingayen Gulf Landings anniversary
LINGAYEN–Gov. Amado T. Espino, Jr., former Gov. Conrado F. Estrella, Sr., Archbishop Socrates Villegas, and dignitaries from the United States and Australian Embassies will lead other guests and World War II veterans in the celebration of the 66th Lingayen Gulf Landings Anniversary and Pangasinan Veterans’ Day on January 10 at the Veterans’ Memorial Park here.
The local and foreign dignitaries who will join Gov. Espino for the wreath laying ceremonies include Lt. Col. Ferdinand Llantero, Defense Attaché from the United States Embassy, Lt. Col. Gary Barnes assistant Defens1e Attache from the Australian Embassy and James Curtis-Smith, president of Returned and Services League of Australia, AFP Commander for NOLCOM Lt. Gen. Gaudencio Pangilinan and Robert Espejo Valdez, representative of the Sons and Daughters of Veterans.
The event also marks the signing of the ordinance into law by Gov. Espino creating the Pangasinan Historical and Cultural Commission as presented by Vice-Governor Ferdinand Calimlim, Jr. and members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan who recently passed the ordinance. After the signing, Gov. Espino will sign the appointment of lawyer Gonzalo Duque as chairman of the commission.
The Governor said the commemoration will showcase historical memoirs which include the account of former Gov. Estrella seen to help unravel the raging debate on where Gen. MacArthur first landed in Pangasinan when he came to liberate the Philippines from the Japanese and remarkable photos taken by Charles DeMay, an American seaman who was part of the Lingayen Gulf landings in 1945.
As the guest of honor and speaker, Estrella, also the former minister of the department of agrarian reform, is expected to talk about his conversation with Gen. MacArthur during the “sentimental journey” at the Urduja House in 1961 when Estrella was then provincial governor of Pangasinan.
On the other hand, Gov. Espino will lead the opening of the exhibit entitled “Lingayen: Building the Legacy of the Past” located also at the Veterans’ Memorial Park. The exhibit features images and stories about Pangasinan heritage and the photos taken by DeMay, which were sent to the provincial government by his son, who is married to a Filipina from Leyte.
From these accounts, he expressed hope that the issue on where MacArthur first landed could be settled.
During the commemoration, Gov. Espino will present the Oldest Living Veteran award to Glicerio Valdez, a retired US Army sergeant from Alcala, Pangasinan. Valdez celebrated his 100th birthday last December 22.
Meanwhile, a medical mission for the veterans and their families will be conducted right after the ceremonies as part of the privileges granted to them by the provincial government where they can avail of free consultation and medicines.
The living WW II veterans of Pangasinan will also be fetched in their towns by the provincial buses to be able to attend the event.

Prov’l gov’t plants 145,661 mangroves stretching to 33.5 kms
LINGAYEN–The Mangrove Reforestation Project launched by Governor Amado T. Espino, Jr. has gone full blast since 2007 with a total of 38.25 hectares and 33.5 kilometers of planted areas in various coastal and riverbanks throughout the province.
A total of 145, 661 seedlings have been planted to date.
The project is a regular activity of the provincial government thru the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist corollary to the environmental programs and projects of the present administration to reforest all the coastal areas of Pangasinan to supplement and enhance the natural proliferation of mangroves.
Provincial Agriculturist Dalisay Moya earlier said that the activity is especially designed to respond to mangrove rehabilitation and protection, which serves as natural habitat and breeding grounds for fish and as a natural barrier during typhoon storm surges. In the long run, Moya added, people in the coastal areas will also reap economic benefits from the project by supporting and enhancing their livelihood.
Aside from this, the activity encourages different stakeholders to get involved in the environmental program of the province as it solicits community participation and raises awareness among the people especially those at the grassroots.
According to Moya, there are around currently 70,000 seedlings available for distribution at the Provincial Mangrove Information Center and Nursery in Brgy. Arnedo, Bolinao.
Recipients of the said project include coastal local government units, schools, barangay councils, churches, fishermen and farmers associations particularly in the towns of Bolinao, Bani, Infanta, Alaminos City, Anda, Dasol, Agno, Sual, Mangaldan San Fabian, Lingayen and Dagupan City.
