Council pushes for CCU conversion into university
URDANETA CITY – The City College of Urdaneta (CCU), operated by the city government here, may soon become the newest university in the province of Pangasinan.
Mayor Amadeo PerezJr. said the city council has passed an ordinance converting CCU into a university, which may possibly make it as the sixth university in Pangasinan after University of Pangasinan, Lyceum Northwestern University and Luzon University in Dagupan; Virgen Milagrosa University Foundation in San Carlos City and the Pangasinan State University in Lingayen.
Perez said once the provincial board approves the ordinance, the CCU will rename City University of Urdaneta (CUU), without waiting for approval from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).
“Anyway whether it’s a college or university, the school is still being supervised by CHED,” he said.
The city’s chief said a similar moves had been previously done by other local government units (LGU) also operating their own colleges.
Some of these LGUs did this even if their schools had only 500 enrollees, said Perez, adding that to date, CCU has some 6,000 enrollees, higher than the population of most schools in Pangasinan.
The city council of Urdaneta believes that CCU, founded in 1966, is already qualified to become a university.
CCU offers courses in nursing, education (elementary and secondary), commerce (accounting, banking and finance and management) Liberal Arts, Computer Science, midwifery and secretarial.
Perez said nursing is the main course being offered by CCU and accounting for at least half of the total enrollees.
CCU will also be giving special focus soon on vocational education.
The school sits on a two and a half hectare campus, where the city government recently added a new four-storey building and is planning to add another one in the near future. — LM
