3rd district congress ‘wannabes’ named
STA.BARBARA, Pangasinan – At least five possible candidates have so far expressed intent to vie for the congressional seat for the third district of Pangasinan in the local elections in May next year.
Retired Philippine National Police deputy Director General Reynaldo Velasco, who hails from barangay Banaoang this town, is the latest to announce his possible bid.
Velasco, in a press conference Thursday, told local newsmen that if surveys would show that he has a chance at getting elected, then he might try his luck in politics. He is giving himself until the middle of January to decide.
He said the first survey he commissioned showed he is not known in other towns and cities within the third district. He said he hopes some of the projects he is currently undertaking will give him ample exposure and recognition.
“Quietly, I have been doing these pero siguro dapat na ring malaman ng mga tao,” he said.
He confessed that before he retired last May 22, 2005 after 38 years in the police service, he was offered by President Arroyo various positions like the ambassadorial post to Taiwan or a director’s seat at the San Miguel Corporation, among others, but he said he begged off.
“The reason why I am posturing for politics is I joked the President then but now I might do it so that she should not worry about me because I’m going to run as congressman of Pangasinan,” Velasco said.
Other contenders for the congressional position are Rachel Arenas, daughter of socialite-philanthropist baby Arenas; Junjun Tulagan, the son of outgoing congressman Generoso Tulagan; three-term Bayambang Mayor Leocadio de Vera Jr.; and Customs deputy director Gallant Soriano. — EVA
