New Year wish list

WE bid goodbye to another year, thankful for everything good that was and learning from whatever unpleasantness there were. In welcoming the New Year, we make wishes for more goodness all around — in politics, the economy, social services, environmental protection, a better and sustainable quality of life for the whole country. Here is our wish list of stories that we hope to see printed in 2011:

– Healing of political rifts. There hangs a sharp division among some of our local leaders — political and taken so deeply personal. Mending these wounds should pave the way for a more unified effort in advancing Pangasinan’s interests towards progress.

– More empowered communities through more active barangay officials who have recently just taken their oath for public service for the next three years. This can be started off with regular forums of the numerous ordinances of their respective towns and cities for enforcement in the community level.  To achieve “Illegal Drug-free Barangay” status will be a great legacy for current barangay officials.

– The beginnings of smaller Task Force Kalikasans at the municipal and city level which will carry out institutionalized environmental programs that will not be dependent on changing leaderships.  The provincial government’s Task Force Kalikasan stands as a symbol that through political will, programs aimed at caring for our natural resources could be accomplished. Perhaps in 2011, we will see.

– Real and lasting peace and order. No more of the drive-by killings that have been haunting our communities.

– A real end to jueteng and other illegal gambling activities like drop-ball, ameneng, etc.

– The rise of more imaginative and creative local executives who will make a difference for their communities.

May true peace and progress await us in 2011.  A blessed new year to all from us here at The Sunday PUNCH!
