Hail to the Pangasinan team and Gov. Espino

By Jesus A. Garcia Jr.

FIRSTLY, my sincerest congratulations to our Pangasinan contingent that bagged the overall team championship in the just concluded Northern Luzon qualifying leg of the POC-PSC-backed Batang Pinoy Games. Of course, congratulations are also due to our sports-minded and energetic Gov. Amado T. Espino, Jr.,who brought the games here in our own backyard. His financial support helped our local bets capture the championship. I believe this is the first time that our province captured the crown since the birth of this youth games in 1999. Pangasinan overtook Baguio City in the overall race on the last day of competitions garnering 70 gold, 80 silver and 80 bronze medals. Baguio wound up second with a gold-silver-bronze harvest of 65-56-48, while Malolos, Bulacan landed a far-cry third with a 16-11-10 score.

Aside from Baguio, Bulacan and host Pangasinan that fielded in 300 athletes, the games were also participated in by Pampanga, Isabela, Nueva Ecija, Cagayan, Nueva Vizcaya, Zambales, La Union, Ilocos Sur, Ilocos Norte plus delegations from some key cities of the said provinces. The medalists in this northern Luzon leg will be sent to Iloilo City for the national championship slated December 5-8. Mabuhay po kayong lahat sa inyong ginintuang kakayahan para sa ating lalawigan.

Secondly, my praises to the organizers of the Dagupan City SK Inter-Barangay Basketball Championship Benjie S. Lim Cup headed by the city’s SK federation president Chester Gonzales as well as to National Basketball Referees Organization (NABRO) Pangasinan-Dagupan City commissioner Alejandro “Jon” Cansino and their staff for a job well done. The first game of the best-of-three series held at the jampacked Dagupan People’s Astrodome last October 14 was won by Binloc over Pantal, 94-93. (See related story on this page) Organizers told this writer that they are anticipating another big crowd on October 20, and on Sunday for the final game in case Pantal beats Binloc. Mabuhay din kayo mga ‘igan. Keep up the good work.

There’s a plan by the organizers of the 2013 LBC Ronda Pilipinas that one of the stage-starts of the 16-day bikathon will be held in my town Mangaldan. Ric Rodriguez, race director of the Ronda told me that after the Olongapo City-Lingayen, Pangasinan stage, the Lingayen –Vigan City starts the following day which is around 260 kilometers. The proposal is to shorten the distance by about 25 kilometers in accordance with rules of cycling and they are planning to choose Mangaldan as the venue of the start. And if that happens, this will be the first time that Mangaldan will host the start in multi-stage national bicycle road racing since the birth of Philippine multi-stage racing in 1955. Knowing Mangaldan and its inhabitants, a huge crowd of cycling fans will gather at the starting line if this plan pushes through. Rodriguez said the official and decision will be sent to Mayor Herminio A. Romero after the qualifying races this coming October 27 and 28 to be conducted at Tarlac City. Let’s wait and see.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK: Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. Therefore “If your enemy hungers, feed him; if he thirsts, give him drink; for in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. ROMANS 12: 14, 17, 19-21
