LTO’s plate standardization plan endorsed in Pangasinan
A CROSS-section of the motoring public in Pangasinan endorsed the plate standardization program of the Land Transportation Office (LTO) during the first nationwide public consultation held Friday at the CSI Stadia in Dagupan.
The consultation, conducted by LTO Region 1, was attended by some 2,000 public and private vehicle owners, including buses, cars, jeepneys, trucks, and tricycles, as well as government representatives.
Those in attendance unanimously said they have no objection to the program which is seen to help fight vehicle theft and increase protection to vehicle owners.
Francis Ray Almora, LTO OIC regional director, said similar consultations will be held simultaneously in several other venues nationwide this week.
Almora explained that under the plate standardization program, the current plating system in the country will be modified using the international standard that uses four numbers.
Additional features will also be included to deter theft and to stop the illegal practice of transferring plates to unregistered vehicles.
A bar code indicating information on the vehicle, except the name of the owner, will be an added feature.
Under the plate standardization, car owners will pay P450 for a new plate while motorcycle and tricycle owners will pay P150.
The LTO plans to implement the standardization program by January 2013.
