Police set to arrest killer
BANTAY DAGAT VOLUNTEER MURDER
SAN FABIAN–Police authorities here announced they are ready to arrest and file charges against the killer of a Bantay Dagat volunteer, who was also the chairman of the Municipal Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Management Council (FARMC) in Barangay Bolasi.
Senior Inspector Ferdinand Lopez of the San Fabian Police said they are withholding the name of the suspect pending the issuance of a warrant of arrest by the court.
Lopez tagged the suspect as a member of a riding-in-tandem gun-for-hire syndicate operating in San Fabian.
Investigation indicates that the victim, Arsenio Halog, 79, was killed early this month in relation to his work as a volunteer Bantay Dagat.
A report gathered by Fourth District Rep. Gina de Venecia’s office showed Halog stumbled into the illegal fishing activities, particularly blast fishing, of some businessmen in San Fabian.
De Venecia’s office is monitoring the investigation of the case at the request of Halog’s widow, Flor, who sought the congresswoman’s help when she visited the victim’s wake.
The victim earlier visited De Venecia’s residence to ask her help in securing Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) membership to more than 50 marginal fishermen in San Fabian.
KAPITAN SLAYING
Meanwhile, De Venecia expressed elation over the issuance of a warrant of arrest against one Richard “Luis” Ferrer of Barangay Tocok, also in San Fabian, who has been tagged as the principal suspect in the gunslaying of Barangay Chairman Arsenio Bucao of Tocok two years ago.
Bucao was shot in during the Barangay Night at the town plaza in January 2010, while De Venecia was speaking just a few meters away from the crime scene.
The incident prompted De Venecia to donate a high-speed motorcycle to each of the five police stations in the Fourth District to help the force go after armed criminals riding-in-tandem.
