City holds 1st Children’s Congress
PRIMARY and secondary level students in Dagupan City enjoyed a “recess” from the regular school routine last week as they participated in the first Children’s Congress held at the CSI Stadia.
The event was opened with a seminar on children’s rights and a discussion of issues participated in by student leaders, parents, and teachers.
The congress, undertaken jointly with the Department of Education-Dagupan City Schools Division, was initiated by the city government and the Sangguniang Panlungsod to create a forum for the student-teacher-parent sector for the development of programs and legislation related to them.
In the last two days of the congress, students were treated to various fun and educational activities, including drawing and coloring, hairstyling, dancing, and a fitness camp.
Commercial sponsors set up booths where they gave away products such as milk, energy snacks, balloons and toothbrushes.
One participant, Jennie of Mother Goose School, said it was helpful and educational for the children.
Another student, Pinky Viray, a grade 4 student at Mangin Elementary School, said the event was “masaya at maganda pero siksikan.”
Laida Gonzales, an adult who accompanied her three grandchildren to the event, said she went there “para maipasyal ang mga bata. Maganda rin kaya lang siksikan, daming tao.”
An estimated 14,000 children from both public and private schools in the city attended.
No untoward incident was reported despite the big crowd.
