‘Tis the season for thieves
WE are now seeing red and green decorations everywhere and at night, dainty fairy lights and the twinkling kinds are ablaze. Christmas carols are already played inside malls and on the airlanes. Yes, Christmas is once again in the air. And sadly, this means that the season is also on when criminals are more actively on the prowl.
Theft will be more rampant nowadays, especially in crowded areas such as the tiangges and baratillos, the shopping malls and generally in the streets where people will be walking about, busy with their to-do and to-buy lists for the holidays.
Home robberies would also be on the rise as crooks become emboldened by the thought that people would have more money these days with the Christmas and year-end bonuses.
So as the festive season approaches, there is a need for local government units (LGUs), the private sector, and communities to support the police force in maintaining peace and order.
LGUs should provide more equipment and other resources to enable our cops to increase their visibility and improve efficiency 24/7. With more people out shopping and partying, opportunities for crimes are higher than usual not only in the daytime but also at night.
Our barangay officials should not allow themselves to get carried away by all the drinking that this season usually prompts. They are a valuable help to the police in taking care of their respective villages and would serve the people well if they also organized increased patrolling activities.
It would also be in the interest of the business sector to chip in, say contributing to the funds for gasoline and some extra incentive pay to the police so that they can be more mobile and motivated in carrying out their job of looking not only after the safety of the communities but the security of their establishments.
Police on active patrol will make criminals think twice before committing their evil deed and at the same time help deter their movements.
The Christmas and New Year holidays have traditionally been a grand and happy time for Filipinos — a season for spending time with family and friends, sharing a banquet, exchanging gifts, and for being hopeful about the start of another year.
Let’s not allow the criminals to spoil this lovely time for us.
