Jazy sprints way to another win
MANGALDAN-born Guamian Jazy Garcia recently shone again in a 50-kilometer race in Marianas.
Garcia entered the last mile of the pre-Hell of Marianas 50-kilometer race in the company of three of Saipan veteran cyclists before launching a down-to-the-wire finish.
The son of PUNCH columnist Jess Garcia, himself heralded as one of the country’s cycling champion in the 70s, Jazy completed the tight race in the road bike category in one hour, 38 minutes, and 11.75 seconds.
About two weeks ago, Garcia beat the same Saipan cyclists in a neck-and-neck finish winning the PIC Bike for Life by only a second.
Garcia was about one-kilometer behind the lead group and had to play catch up against the three.
“I cramped twice and decided to slow down. I caught up with them at Aquarius Beach Towel and from there kept pace with the group,” said Garcia, who decided to pace himself and sprinted in the last few meters of the race.
