Can the UL five do it?

By Jesus A. Garcia, Jr.

BY THE time you read this piece, our Pangasinan delegation to the Philippine Collegiate Championship League (PCCL) North-Central Luzon tilt, the University of Pangasinan Golden Tigers, will already be in Vigan City battling the best in this area headed by last year and defending champion Lyceum of Subic of Zambales, Cordillera region titlist University of Baguio and Ilocos titleholder University of Northern Philippines.

The winner of this tourney slated October 16-18 will advance to the Luzon-Metro Manila zonal champions tilt where 12 teams are scheduled to clash with each other, namely UAAP teams University of the East, National University, and NCAA squads Letran and Arellano U and South Luzon-Bicol regional champion Computer Communications Development Institute, plus the Visayas champions the University of Iloilo and University of San Carlos Southwestern University and the eventual champions in the Mindanao zonal leg next month in Cebu.

PCCL rule says the top six teams in the final zonal challenge will advance to the “Sweet 16” round of the leg and will join UAAP three-time champion Ateneo, FEU, Adamson, La Salle, San Beda, San Sebastian, Jose Rizal, Mapua, University of Cebu and University of Visayas who earned the ten outright slots for their good showings in their respective national tournaments as champions and first runners-up.

“We have to do our best. Our chance now is fifty-fifty and the team to beat is defending champion Lyceum of Subic having four Fil-Am players and six-foot-five center last name Collado,” said UL coach Renato “Jack” Vidal. “The three-day tourney is also a good tune-up matches for our boys for the coming Region 1 PRISAA Meet scheduled October 27-30 in Laoag City.”

Vidal said his boys are composed of Jeffrey Vitales, Joshua Gutierrez, Alvin Clores, Ramil Baniqued, Jonathan Panunciar, Harold Deocares, JayR Franada, John Balmes, Dexter Langaman, Roberto Maningding, Norman Ilao, Willy Caina and Kevin Sespene.

The Lyceum Northwestern University Dukes represented our province last year being the champion of the 2009 PRISAA-UCAAP Inter-Collegiate Basketball champions. The crown was captured by the Golden Tigers this year, two games to one, against the Dukes. The victory entitled them to represent our province in any collegiate competitions in the country. And if lucky again to win the PRISAA regional meet, they will represent our region in the PRISAA National Games sometime on February next year in Cebu City.

Good luck to you guys and bring home the gold. I believe you can do it.

My big congrats to Jennifer Manzano and her partner Satchel Senupe for retaining the Petron Ladies Beach Volleyball Battle of Champions crown held at Baywalk sand court last October 12. The lanky five-foot-ten Manzano is a Criminology student of La Salle-Dasmarinas and from barangay Balangobong, Lingayen, Pangasinan. The duo defeated the tandem of Letran’s Gena Andaya and Marinelli Jane Carolino in the finals, 21-11 and 21-13 to pocket the P20,000 top prize. The Manzano-Senupe duo will be sent to China to take part in the Summer Universiade early next year.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK: Jesus said, “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and the most important of the commandments. And the second is like it: “You shall love your neighbour as yourself.” (Matthew 22: 37-39)
