LNU, UC sign sisterhood pact

LYCEUM Northwestern University (LNU) in Dagupan City and the University of the Cordilleras in Baguio City recently signed a sisterhood agreement to collaborate in research, special projects and other initiatives to improve education of their respective faculties.

The sisterhood pact was signed by Dr. Gonzalo Duque, LNU president, and Dr. Ricardo Fama, UC president during LNU’s celebration of Founder’s Day in honor of the late Pangasinan Governor and Health Secretary Francisco Q. Duque Jr.

Fama said the sisterhood agreement is necessary, as the two universities, which were already in informal partnerships before the agreement, have limited resources and “can achieve many things” by pooling their resources together.

He added that this is important in the face of the coming ‘open border’ policy in 2015, when graduates of other countries will be free to come and practice their profession in the Philippines and vice versa for Filipino professionals.

“We have to prepare ourselves with the best education that we can get so that we can compete with the best from Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and other countries,” Fama said.

Nineteen of the top universities in the world are from Asia and not a single one is from the Philippines, he noted.

The two universities will collaborate in the field of Electronic Communications Engineering, with UC already allocating two scholarships for LNU faculty for a master’s degree.

Fama said UC already has a tie-up with St. Paul University for a doctoral program in nursing, which he promised to extend to LNU.

Further, UC, along with the University of Santo Tomas in Manila and San Carlos University in Cebu, had recently been granted authority by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) to pilot the PhD in engineering education program, and LNU will be UC’s partner in this undertaking.

Dr. Caridad Abuan, director of the CHED Region 1, witnessed the signing. Also present was Dr. Francisco Duque III, chairman of the Civil Service Commission and younger brother of Gonzalo. –LM
