82-year old retiree tries politics
BINMALEY—He may be old, but you can’t label him a trapo (traditional politician).
Teodulo Abalos of Barangay Gayaman here, confident of his capability to help make improvements in local governance in his hometown, is an 82-year old retired mining engineer who is braving the world of politics.
“If Senator Juan Ponce Enrile who is older than me can withstand the rigors of campaign and politics nationwide, then perhaps I can also do it as mine is only town-wide,” said Abalos, who is running for the first time an independent candidate for a seat in the municipal council in the May 2013 election.
Abalos, who filed his certificate of candidacy last October 2, said he believes he is better qualified than other candidates who “merely capitalize on the name of their husbands or wives already in politics”.
Abalos worked as an electrical engineer for 15 years with the federal government in the United States, where his four children still live and have not been told about his political plans.
A widower, Abalos lives here alone and is a registered voter who has exercised his right in previous elections.
He is a member of the Knights of Columbus and Rotary Club here.—Eva Visperas
