Pugaro, Mamalingling are champs

BARANGAYS Pugaro and Mamalingling captured the volleyball (women) and basketball (men) championship crowns, respectively, in the 1st Dagupan City Inter-Barangay Council Sports Festival which was concluded last week.
It was a sweet victory for the island-barangay vollleybelles of Pugaro as they beat Barangay Bonuan Boquig in three straight sets, 25-23, 25-21, and 25-19, while Barangay Bonuan Gueset outclassed Pantal to grab third place in three of four sets, 25-16, 19-25, 25-18, and 27-25.
In basketball, Team Mamalingling repulsed rallies of the Bolosan squad and Pugaro to clinch the title, 68-61. Immediately at the sound of the buzzer signaling the end of the championship game, Mamalingling constituents unfurled and hoisted a streamer congratulating the team for their victory.
In the face-off for third place, Pugaro quintet smashed Bonuan Boquig five, 97-69.
During the awarding ceremonies that followed, the four winning teams in each event and their barangay chairmen were presented trophies and cash prizes by Vice-Mayor Belen T. Fernandez who later announced that another sports festival featuring ten-pin bowling, badminton, and basketball will be held next month.
Trophies for were also presented to basketball’s most valuable player, mythical five, and best coach and to volleyball’s most valuable player, mythical six, and best coach.
The sports festival, which started on June 30 with 29 out of 31 barangays in the city participating, was supported by Fernandez, the Sangguniang Panlungsod, CSI Group of Companies, USATV, BASADA, and BAP (Basketball Association of the Philippines) Region I, Inc.–Philamer C. Celi
