NFA: No rotten rice stocks here

NO rotten or rotting rice stocks are stashed in National Food Authority (NFA) warehouses in Pangasinan.

This assurance was made by Ramon Cuaresma, head of the NFA western Pangasinan branch, during the KBP Forum at the Philippine Information Agency last week.

Walang bulok at wala ring nabubulok sa aming warehouses,” Cuaresma said.

President Benigno Aquino III, in his first State of the Nation Address last July 26, bared that the previous administration imported too much rice that some ended up rotting in NFA warehouses around the country.

Cuaresma, however, said some 24,000 bags of palay and rice were damaged during the massive floods brought by typhoon Pepeng in October last year.

But these damaged stocks were covered by insurance and have already been properly disposed in a recent public bidding.

“For animal feeds nang mga yon,” Cuaresma said.

Jessie Fernandez of the Government Service Insurance System, who was also present at the forum, confirmed the insurance coverage.

ENOUGH SUPPLY

Meanwhile, Cuaresma also said that there is more than enough supply to meet the province’s demand up to the end of the year with 388,000 bags stored in 32 NFA warehouses.

In addition, estimated commercial stocks run to 146,000 bags, while household inventory is 342,000 bags.

Cuaresma also expressed support to the thrust of the new administration to prioritize local palay procurement over rice importation.
