CdD quintet upsets defending champ LNU
THE unheralded Colegio de Dagupan (CdD) quintet stood tall after a stunning 77-73 victory over Lyceum Northwestern University Dukes (LNU), champion of the 2009 PRISAA-UCAAP Inter-Collegiate Basketball Championship, during their game July 26 for this year’s PRISAA-UCAAP season.
Short in height but packed with speed and accuracy in long range shots, the Arellano street-based CdD boys nicknamed “Blue Stallions” held the Dukes at bay in the first quarter at 18-18 all, then wrestled control in the second period with guard Melvin Estacio pumping three treys and three free throws, putting his team on top, 36-29, in the first half.
Sensing the possibility of defeat, the Dukes of Atty. Gonzalo T. Duque retaliated with an 18-10 run with reliable veteran guard Benjie Labitoria nailing 10 points, giving his team the lead in the third quarter by a point, 52-51.
After the second deadlock at 53-53, the Blue Stallions of Voltaire Arzadon led by Estacio opened up a 69-59 cushion, with four minutes left in the fourth and final period. The team protected the front with center Randy Manongo working hard at the shaded lane until the final buzzer sounded to the delight of the CdD student crowd.
The Blue Stallions so far are spotless with two victories.
“We’re tired of being at the cellar since the time we joined the league many years back,” said a player who asked not to be named. “I think we are a title-contender this year because we beat the giant team,” he added. Estacio poured in a game high 20 points while Manongo contributed 15.
On the losing side, LNU’s four veteran players came in double digit figures with guard Llyod Quisay scoring a team high 16 points. Postman Lionel Manalo contributed 15 while Labitoria and power-forward MichaelnIndoy had 14 and 12 points, respectively.
