Man posing as councilor arrested for extortion

A MAN posing as a city councilor and attempting to extort money from a salon owner was arrested by the police on July 6 in an entrapment operation.

Danilo de Vera, 48, of Guiguilonen, Mangaldan, phoned the owner of Salon de Dagupan at 10:00 a.m. that day pretending to be Councilor Karlos Reyna and was soliciting P5,000 for a supposed project at the Dagupan City National High School.

The owner of the salon later phoned the real Councilor Karlos Reyna who confirmed that it was not he who called and neither was he soliciting money from any person or establishment.

In coordination with the Public Order and Safety Office and the Police, De Vera was immediately arrested in an entrapment operation when he arrived to pick up the ‘donation’ from an employee of the salon.

A verification showed that De Vera has victimized several other politicians and business establishments using a similar modus operandi.

He is suspected to be the same person who, on several occasions like the city fiesta and the Bangus Festival, solicited money using names of city officials.

The suspect was charged with robbery-extortion by the police. Reyna plans on filing a case against the suspect as well.—LM
