Blasted giant sea turtle laid to rest
A HEADLESS giant Sea Turtle (Chelonia mydas) was re-interred Tuesday at the Fish Cemetery inside the 24-hectare National Fisheries Technology Development Center (NIFTDC) after it was exhumed and subjected to an autopsy.
Experts from the NIFTDC determined that blasting, an illegal fishing method, was the main cause of death of the turtle which was first found Sunday morning on the shore of Barangay Nibaliw, San Fabian where it was first buried by residents and members of the town’s Bantay Dagat.
The giant turtle had a carapace of 28 centimeters by 35 centimeters and weighed from 65 to 75 tons.
Dr. Westly Rosario, NIFTDC director who supervised the autopsy of the sea turtle, said the head of the turtle might have been blasted away by dynamite explosion somewhere in the Lingayen Gulf.
The turtle’s tragic death confirms that dynamite fishing is still ongoing in the gulf, particularly near the San Fabian area.
At the Fish Cemetery, whales that died have been buried in the area over a 10-years period.
