DAGUPAN BANGUS BRANDING

TAKING on the initiative of the city government, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) has rallied fishpond operators to put a concerted effort in pursuing the speedy accreditation of the Dagupan Bangus as a distinct brand.

At the 19th Fisheries Industry Forum for Stakeholders held last Friday, Nestor Domenden, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Region 1 director, said, “We need something that binds us together to market our product without let-up and in unison”.

At the same time, Domenden, whose office is based in Dagupan City, vowed that the agency will lend full support to the industry.

“We will be the force behind you,” he said.

BFAR Region 1, in partnership with the local government units and fish producers, will establish, document, implement and maintain a Bangus Branding Program, to carry out a trade name that distinguishes it in quality, taste, texture.

This will be done through a process of farm registration and accreditation, and product certification to ensure genuineness of the product for sustained patronage of consumers without fear of deception.

The bangus branding program covers all bangus growers in fishponds, fish pens and fish cages.

Buenaventura Ayson, BFAR productivity and quality specialist, said bangus is the dominant cultured fish species in Region 1, particularly Pangasinan and La Union.

Bonuan bangus remains a brand of quality bangus in taste, he added.

In the capital Metro Manila, bangus from Pangasinan are labeled, marketed, and sold at a premium price.
