Duque to head group to write Pangasinan history
LINGAYEN–After heading a special committee that successfully determined a researched-based date of the founding of Pangasinan, Dr. Gonzalo Duque, president of the Lyceum Northwestern University, has been given another assignment by re-elected Governor Amado Espino Jr.
Through an executive order (No. 0033-2010) dated June 8, 2010, Duque has been designated chairman of a special committee that will conduct the research and write a book that will serve as the official history of the province.
The governor noted that there is no single authoritative compilation of chronologically arranged historical facts about Pangasinan.
In giving Duque the task, Espino said the former vice governor and PUNCH columnist has proven his competence to lead a research study.
For his part, Duque said Pangasinan has a rich history involving Chinese roots, the Spanish and American colonization, the coming of the British and the Dutch as well as Japanese Occupation.
The work will involve the academe, particularly teachers of history in all levels, the Department of Education, and the Commission on Higher Education.
After compiling Pangasinan’s history, the information will be integrated in the school curriculum to strengthen the sense of history among the new generation of Pangasinenses.—LM
