More kids enroll as classroom lack worsens
A NEW school year starts this week and the longstanding problem of lack of classrooms has not changed. In fact, the lack has worsened.
Education Program Supervisor Carmina Gutierrez of the Pangasinan I division said with the increase of enrollees for school year 2010-2011, the lack of classrooms has become more palpable.
But she explained that the Department of Education (DepEd) is doing everything it can to alleviate the situation.
In Dagupan, the schools division launched the Oplan: Balik Eskwela program this month to encourage students to go back to school while efforts at rehabilitating school buildings and facilities are ongoing to address the impending dangers of La Niña.
“Alam naman natin na ang Dagupan ay mababa kaya nalulublob sa tubig- baha at putik ang ilan sa mga eskwelahan natin but we are thankful to the city government and other NGOs na tumulong na ma-rehabilitate at ma-elevate ang ating mga classrooms para malayo sa baha,” Assistant Superintendent Merlita Pasiliao of the Dagupan City schools division said.
Meanwhile, Gutierrez reiterated the ‘no collection policy” upon enrolment in public schools and urged parents and students to call the DepEd Pangasinan I hotline number 542- 5965 for any problem they may encounter that involve collections in any form.
She warned that classes may be suspended during typhoons despite preparations.
“The Schools Division Superintendent can announce the suspension of classes. However, since typhoon situation varies in every area, it is the discretion of the mayor whether to suspend classes in their locality or not,” she said.
“It is the local chief executive who can assess if the typhoon poses imminent danger to students. Barangay heads and school heads can also suspend classes,” she explained.
ALTERNATIVE LEARNING
Meanwhile, the DepEd is strengthening its Alternative Learning System (ALS) in public schools to accommodate dropouts, students in far-flung areas, children with disabilities and elders who wish to continue their education.
The ALS offers alternative learning outside the regular school classrooms and is supervised by mobile teachers.
