ENVIRONMENT MONTH

LINGAYEN–Governor Amado Espino Jr. called on the provincial government employees to serve as role models for the rest of Pangasinenses in protecting the environment, starting with keeping the Capitol grounds as a show window of orderliness and cleanliness.

In last week’s launching of the national environment month, the governor said people must start with small but basic things like keeping the surroundings of the Capitol clean.

Maliit at simpleng bagay pero malaki ang epekto kapag ginawa,” Espino said.

A signature campaign led by the key officials in the Capitol and various stakeholders in support of the province’s biodiversity program was launched to highlight his call.

Part of the month-long celebration includes a photo exhibit at the Veteran’s Park showcasing the province’s natural resources.

The provincial government’s program on environmental protection focuses on coastal reforestation.

Today, 27 species of mangrove species can be found in the province and being propagated at the government-owned Bolinao Fish Farm Nursery. The mangrove species are distributed to different coastal towns for planting.

The annual Ilog Ko, Aroen Ko project, a component of the Save Lingayen Gulf (SLING) movement is aimed at protecting the province’s rivers. It was a pet project of the governor during his tenure as the PNP provincial director in 1994,

Meanwhile, Pangasinan was listed as a finalist for the Likas Yaman Awards for Environmental Excellence (Best LGU initiated environmental project category) in the region.

World Environment Month is celebrated every June in the country by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 237. This year is celebrated as the international year of biodiversity.
