CONSUMER education, a new elective subject in first year high school, will be tested by the Department of Education (DepEd ) and the Department of Trade Industry (DTI) in two pilot schools in Pangasinan beginning this school year.

Marjorie Loresco, chief of the consumer welfare division of the DTI provincial office, said the subject will be first taught to freshmen of the Dagupan City National High School and the Tayug National High School using the module jointly prepared by DTI and DepEd officials.

The module seeks to create long-term consumer consciousness and quality-consciousness among Filipinos, said Loresco speaking during the KBP forum last week.

“We hope that the pilot testing of the subject would be successful, so children would know how to buy good quality products instead of the defective ones turned in by suppliers,” she said.

The module includes lessons on how a child can detect a defective product being sold in the market.

The introduction of Consumer Education in schools was proposed by the Philippine education sector to enhance consumer awareness in the country.

At the same time, Loresco said students taking up the Consumer Education subject in school could be tapped to become members of the Bantay Bilihin group that monitors the quality of goods in the market. –LM
