Urdaneta landfill set to open mid-July

URDANETA CITY–The first ever sanitary landfill in Pangasinan, currently in the final stage of construction in Barangay Catablan here, is set to be operational by the middle of July this year.

Outgoing Mayor Amadeo Perez Jr. said the sanitary landfill is among the few remaining unfinished projects programmed by his administration.

Perez, who will go back to being a private citizen after he steps down, said he will be happy to see the project in operation and is confident that it will be managed well by his son, Mayor-elect Amadeo ‘Bubom” Perez IV, currently serving as a city councilor.

The mayor said the sanitary landfill has a land area of 16 hectares but only six hectares will be utilized initially just to meet the present needs of the city while four hectares are being held in reserve.

The 16-hectare are includes the six-hectare existing dumpsite that will be eventually be permanently closed and converted into a tree park.

The project was financed by a P220 million loan obtained by the city from the Land Bank of the Philippines out of which P20 million was utilized for land acquisition and P10 million for the improvement of a road leading to the project site.

Once operational, Urdaneta City will be the first local government unit in Pangasinan to comply with the landfill provision of the Solid Waste Management Act or Republic Act 9003.

Perez said the main landfill site is set to be completed by the end of June, barring any weather disturbances and it will take another month to finish the other infrastructures at the site.

“But definitely, in two months time, the project will be operational already,” Perez said.—LM
