THE city’s jeepney drivers are a lucky bunch.

Just two weeks after the May 10 elections, outgoing fourth district Rep. Jose de Venecia Jr. delivered on his promise to provide them P.5 million seed money for their projects.

The fund, coursed through Sangguniang Panlungsod of Dagupan City, was earmarked as financial assistance to the Metro Dagupan Jeepney Drivers Association for some of the group’s priority projects.

Councilor Karlos Reyna, who proposed the measure as chair of the committee on public works and public utilities, said the amount could be used by the association in putting up their own gasoline station that can provide them cheaper fuel or to form a cooperative, using the amount as their capital.

The proposal, approved as contained in Resolution No.6507-2010, was passed during the regular session of the SP on Tuesday, presided over by Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez with eight city councilors attending.

De Venecia promised the funding to the jeepney and tricycle drivers association during the campaign.
