Lingayen Beach clean-up marks Ocean Month
LINGAYEN–The Ocean Month was observed in Pangasinan on May 25 with the cleaning and clearing of the Lingayen Beach by personnel of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Police Provincial Office.
More than 15 sacks of garbage were collected, most of which were plastic cups and wrappers left behind by careless visitors.
Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer Leduina Co, who led the clean-up together with Police Provincial Director Percival Barba, said she was particularly dismayed that most of the plastic materials were buried in the sand.
“We want to deliver a message to visitors that it is everybody’s responsibility to clean the beach, and they should not wait for other people to pick their wastes,” said Co.
Co stressed that the seawater as well as the fresh water coming from the uplands must be protected as they are all part of man’s inexhaustible resources in the planet.
Barba added it’s time for people to learn to care about their environment.
“To me it’s the question of behavior by some of our careless citizens,” Barba said, also blaming some tourists for the mess at the beach.
Barba said the police have always been supportive of all the programs of the DENR, and cited a program called “Lakas-Pulot Basura” directing policemen to pick up garbage as they jog along the beach as part of their daily regimen.–LM
