Red tide hit 3 western towns

THE area affected by red tide in western Pangasinan has widened over the last few weeks to include the coastal vicinities of Anda and Bolinao, which are adjacent to the town of Bani where the occurrence was first detected.

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources  (BFAR) has issued advisory warning residents to refrain from harvesting shellfish, such as mussels and oysters.

Dr. Westly Rosario, chief of the National Integrated Fisheries Technology and Development Center in Dagupan City, said recent monitoring indicate that the red tide toxin has been found recently in the two towns.

Rosario called on the local governments of Bani, Anda and Bolinao to help enforce the ban against harvesting of shellfish.

He warned that eating shellfish affected by red tide could be fatal and asked the local government units to seize all harvests from the source or are being delivered to markets.

Rosario said the prevailing hot weather condition has spawned the growth of red tide micro-organisms that contain the deadly toxin.

Symptoms of this condition include vomiting, dizziness, numbness of lips, hands, feet and body.—LM
