LINGAYEN–The Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) has endorsed the restoration of the Casa Real, a Spanish-era building that served as the first provincial seat of government.

The provincial board, however, wants funding for the renovation work to come from the national government through Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority under the Department of Tourism.

Proposed Provincial Resolution No. 1446-2012 titled “Expressing Full Support to the Casa Real Restoration Project” was approved by the SP last September 17, but renamed “Expressing Full Support to the Casa Real Restoration Project and Endorsing The Same to the Department of Tourism for Possible Financial Assistance” to remove the financial responsibility on the provincial government.

The initial recommendation for the Casa Real restoration project was made by the Pangasinan Historical and Cultural Commission.

Casa Real which was declared a National Historical Landmark by the National Historical Institute on March 13, 2002.

The resolution states that Casa Real is envisioned by the provincial government to stand as a historical landmark that may be utilized as a provincial museum to house old books, documents, artifacts, archaeological relics and other materials of historical and cultural value.

One of the proposal’s authors, 2^nd District Board Member Von Mark Mendoza, cited the urgency to renovate the building by describing the major damage suffered by it at the height of Typhoon Cosme in 2008 and stressed that the province should not allow the condition of the “national historic landmark” to further deteriorate.—with reports from Eva Visperas and Johanne R.
